Next semester I'm taking a class called CRJ 624: Computer Applications in Criminal Justice Research. From what I've been told, learning how to use SPSS and other similar software is a big part of the course.

Anyone ever take anything similar? If not, anyone ever use SPSS? How difficult is it?

The stats class I took in grad school was about 60% SPSS work, as was my research methods class. SPSS is not a really bad program -- if you have experience with MS Access, you'll be fine, and if not, you'll be fine too. The tutorials are pretty good and unless you want to get way deep into stats, you don't need more than the basic functions.

Does your computer lab have the software installed? Ours did, which saved me a lot of money when I was doing the data analysis of my thesis. I had more than 600 cases to input with 17 variables each and the student version does not allow for that many cases/variables.

If you need more help, lmk and I'll dig up the help sites I have around here for you! :)

Far as I'm aware, we have a couple labs on campus with SPSS installed. So that will definitely be nice.

And I have never used Access before, so I should still be okay?

Oh yeah. I am by no means an Access guru, I just found some similiarities between the two programs.

Glad they have it in the labs -- that will really help you out!

I have a class this semester (Quantitative Strategies for Analysis) that uses SPSS. I don't think it's that hard at all, but our prof did go over the basics to help us out.Plus, it's one of those programs where you can dick around on it and eventually find what you're looking for without destroying the entire computer. :) I really liked that the computer labs on campus had the program because it's really expensive.
